The Early Modern Kitchen

I am not much of a cook.  I never learned how, I constantly mistrust or misread recipes, I don’t find it that interesting, and I’m not what one might call adventurous when it comes to food.  I’ve resolved to become a better cook, however, and what better place to start than the early modern period?

As time permits, I plan to make dishes according to instructions from early modern cookbooks and record my experiences here.  I’ll do my best not to set the kitchen on fire, but it’s sure to be entertaining.

I’ll be using online resources, like the British Library’s “Books for Cooks” exhibit, and several cookbooks accessible via Early English Books Online.  I’ll also keep an eye out for other interesting early modern cooking resources, facsimiles, etc.  If you have a resource to share, I’d love to hear about it.  Look below for links to my efforts.
